IDI Engine Vs DI Engine

The main difference between a direct injection (DI) engine and an indirect injection (IDI) engine is the way fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber. In an IDI engine, fuel is injected into the intake manifold outside of the combustion chamber. The fuel mixes with air as it travels through the intake valves and enters the combustion chamber as a homogeneous mixture. The spark plug then ignites the fuel-air mixture, resulting in combustion. In a DI engine, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at high pressure. This allows for more precise control over the fuel delivery, which can result in improved fuel efficiency, power output, and emissions performance. By injecting the fuel directly into the combustion chamber, the fuel is able to mix more evenly with the air, resulting in a more complete combustion. Another advantage of DI engines is that they can operate at higher compression ratios than IDI engines, which can also contribute to better fuel efficiency and power output. Overall, DI engines are more advanced and efficient than IDI engines, but they can also be more complex and expensive to manufacture and maintain. However, due to stricter emissions regulations and the push towards more efficient vehicles, DI engines are becoming more common in modern vehicles.
